1) If I apply to the UK for uni in 2009, what month do I send out my personal statement and apply through UCAS to the unis etc?
2) If i apply to a university and get accepted, then decide I want to take a gap year... what happens?

UCAS applications for 2009 must be completed and submitted by the 1st January 2009 for them to be obligated to consider your applications. However, most universities will look at applications made after this date up until June equally. Applications aren't usually considered as a 'late' application until June/July.
The exception is Oxbridge and application for medicine (and I think dentistry and design route A (or is it B?) can't remember) where they must be made by October the something...either the beginning or end of the month. Again, can't remember.
If you get accepted and then change your mind, you simply contact the uni and see if it is possible for you to defer a year. Most unis will be accomodating.
