In Lost, why does Jack keep changing his mind?

First he tries for like 4 seasons to get off the island.

Then his life off the island sucks and he eventually decides he wants to go back

Then he goes back to the island in 1977, and decides to prevent them from ever getting to the island in the first place.

My question is: why? Does he really want to be on the island and be the man like he was in seasons 1 and 2, or go back to his old life and be a successful doctor?
In Lost, why does Jack keep changing his mind?
Initially, his reason for wanting to get off the island is just like everyone else. He wants to go home; he has had enough of the difficulties on the island and just wants everthing to return to normal. When the Oceanic Six get off the island, he tries to go back to normal by being a doctor again, trying to build a relationship with Kate, but the guilt of leaving the rest of the survivors on the island (Sawyer, Jin, Claire, etc) and having to lie about their whereabouts and what happened to them on the island keeps getting to Jack (and to the rest of the Oceanic Six, especially Hurley).

Because of this guilt (and after finding out that Claire is his half-sister) Jack plummets into this downward spiral. He starts to drink, taking pills, argues a lot with Kate, etc. He realizes that the price he has to pay for going back to the %26quot;real world%26quot; is something he can't really bear. Jack goes to a bridge to commit suicide, but he is diverted because a woman crashes her car and needs help. Jack's hero complex prevents him from jumping off the bridge and it makes him realize that he can do something to try to save his friends back on the island.

Fast forward to the Oceanic Six on Ajira Airways on their way to get back to the island. They all have different reasons for going back. Kate is determined to find Claire because she feels guilty for having Aaron. Jack just wants to make sure everyone is OK and get them off the island. Hurley wants to help as well; he was the first one who was uneasy about keeping the secret, which was why he ended up at Santa Rosa medical again. Sun wants to find Jin; Ben gave her hope that Jin was still alive by showing her his wedding ring. And Sayid was on his way to Guam to face charges for killing one of the people Ben asked him to kill while off the island.

When the Oceanic Six get on the island, they find that they are stuck in the 70s. Everyone on the island is pretty much just OK where they are. Sawyer and Juliet are %26quot;playing house%26quot; at the DHARMA Initiative, etc. But their arrival causes some trouble and leads to a whole lot of mess. Now, the only way out is to try to get everyone off the island, and Faraday figures that they can attempt to do something to make it so that they never get to the island and never have to go through all these shenanigans.

The bottom line is: every one of the people on flight 815 was running from something when the plane crashed in 2004. Their time on the island allowed them to atone for their crimes off the island. For instance, Kate was a fugitive off the island but on the island she has tried to help out on the island. Michael was an absentee father off the island but on the island he tries to be the best dad to Walt. Claire wanted to give up her child for adoption but her experience on the island only brought her closer to her son. Charlie gave up his heroin addiction on the island, etc.

So basically, everyone was able to atone for something on the island, but they never expected to have to go through all this trouble. There were suddenly so many casualties. Boone, Arzt, Shannon, Libby, Ana Lucia, etc. The only way out is to leave the island. I think that had everyone left the island without leaving anyone behind, they would have turned out OK. The guilt of having left people on the island while the Oceanic Six lived normal lives was the straw that broke the camel's back.
In Lost, why does Jack keep changing his mind?
jack is just confused. lol i never thouhgt of it that way b4
He wants to be the knowledgeable, trusted doctor again. He had problems before the island, but not like he does now, he craves Kate, addicted to pain-killers and alcohol etc.
