Changing your mind about joining before leaving for basic.?

I joined the army national guard and im having family problems and some second thoughts about being in the millitary. I have only 3 weeks till basic and I dont know if this is right for me. I dont want this to affect me on rejoining later or getting state/gov jobs. So will i get a shitty discharge for calling this off before i goto basic?

My recruiter said it would affect me and that i shouldnt do it.

No you will not get any type of discharge because you are not in the military yet..

While waiting to leave to basic it is your right to negotiate your contract and you can cancel at any time..Of course your recruiter will get very mad and will lie to you stating that you will possibly go to jail or this and that..but in the end he has no choice but to release you..

Just tell him ASAP..Make it perfectly clear that you will not ship..Always remember that you are the one in charge and not them...There is NO penalty for backing out..Good luck to you..

I agree that you should got to basic. If you back out, you won't get a discharge at all, and if the draft ever comes back, you're at the top of the list.
he's probably right...
Everyone gets nervous before going. I hated it at first, and thought about trying to get out. I am so glad that I stayed, and finished. Its one of the best things I did. National Guard is the best one to join if you don't want to be a full time soldier. Depending on the family problems you are having, you should rethink trying to get out.
Usually in such a situation you would get what the military calls a %26quot;general discharge%26quot; but you really don't want this because it has almost as negative affect your future career potential as a dishonerable discharge does!

Let you recruiter know your change-of-mind but also let him know that you still are serious about joining. He may just tear up your paperwork and be done with it BUT if it's already been processed, you're committed. Just make sure that whatever you do that you do not end up with a general discharge. The only way to leave the Armed Services is with an honorable discarge.

Good Luck!
national guard is a reserve unit and if you swore in when you went to meps your in. active duty has to sware in 2 times until they are in. if you are required to sware in agian then you can back out now but if you only have to sware in once then your in and there is no backing out
Hello

A DEP discharge is officially known as an %26quot;Entry Level Separation%26quot; (ELS). An ELS is not characterized. It's not %26quot;Honorable,%26quot; it's not %26quot;General,%26quot; it's not %26quot;Under Other Than Honorable,%26quot; it's not anything. DEP Discharges do not result in an RE (Reenlistment Eligibility) Code that will prevent joining the same (or another) military service in the future.

A DEP discharge has one, and only one negative effect: If you are discharged from the DEP, and later want to enlist in that SAME service, you will require a waiver. While waivers are usually granted, you may lose certain benefits, such as the ability to chose what job you want, or what date you will ship out to basic training
i did the same thing before i joined and i actualy said no and then changed my mind again a few months later and went to boot. You cant get a discharge if you have not sworn in yet. Your recruitor is doing what they do best and filling you with lies to try and insure his numbers go up. The day you go to MEPS and swear in is the day your in the military and subjected to discharges. Dont go if your not sure... too many people do this and then end up unhappy in an obligatin four years... be sure you want to devote part of your life to the organization.
